Your Intentions Drive the Project

Let’s look at the question of intentions when it comes to writing and designing your training materials. In my mind intentions include, the goal of your training, the approach you’re taking to reach that goal and the other issues involved in determining and constructing the appropriate training and more.

Think of a pair of hands cupped together holding goals, training materials and techniques and the peripheral needs and concerns that accompany any activity in business, or life – for that matter. That’s what the term intentions signifies to me. As an instructional and training designer and editor, I try to discover my client’s intentions as early in the design-writing process as possible.

I'll Be Trying to Exceed Your Expectations

Suppose you were my client, whether you represent the training department of a global enterprise, a company delivering training and trainers to national and international corporations or a small business, knowing your intention or intentions for the project will help me design the materials with an eye to fulfill and exceed your needs and expectations.

On most projects after an initial meeting work begins with one or two people or a small team of individuals assigned to the project. One of those people is usually the designated contact and sometimes the first decision maker. Let’s face it, if that’s you, your needs and intentions are a very important factor in determining the degree of success the project will achieve.

Your Intentions – here are three important intentions to keep in mind for starters:

  • What are your intentions concerning this trainings impact on your company, for your immediate supervisors and associates and your own career? This is a personal, often gut-level view of the training project and where it’s going.

  • What goal or goals is the training intended to achieve? A more objective view, sometimes determined by the CEO or other high-level VIP, a VP or a Department Head or even your own client’s needs.

  • What form will the training and training materials take? This is a nuts and bolts view that may be determined by your company’s earlier approach or view of training or may require something completely new.

We probably won't discuss all these intentions and goals at our first meeting, but we’re likely to touch on all or most of them as the project advances. The more I know about your intentions for the project the better chance I’ll have to deliver the results you’re looking for. It’s much easier to deliver quality materials on time or earlier when the training project or customization is clearly defined.

It all starts with asking about your intentions.
