Do You Need A Better Writer?

I interviewed a successful woman last week who asked me if writing was hard for me. She had a successful business, a beautiful house located in the Ojai Valley in Southern California, found time to volunteer at several non-profits and had a first class education. “I never liked writing,” she said. “I was never good at it”

People tell me they hate writing. At the very least, many people say they don’t like to write and avoid writing when ever they can. I usually reply that some writing projects have been very hard, but that I like to write, always have, and that I was usually up to whatever writing challenge came my way.

The Problem with Writing

The problem most people have with writing is all those rules about writing. Throughout the process of being taught to write, most people had to learn lots of rules, many of which they could never remember. And there are plenty of rules to remember when you write in English. Just consider the two words lie and lay*. How many times were you told the rules of when to use one or the other?

Take a look at the email you get or read a few descriptions for items on eBay and you’ll discover that many people don’t write well and lots of people can’t spell or don’t know how or when to use a spellchecker.

Is There a Professional Writer in the House?

Of course you can hire a writer to do your writing – and you should, especially if you don’t like to write and you’ve got other deadlines to meet. Maybe it’s time to use a professional writer to write and edit your written materials.

Let the professional writer do your research too – we’re usually good at it. Let the writer read background materials and write a first and second draft. You can read what they’ve written and make suggestions. You’ll manage the project without having to lift a pen or pencil or making a single key stroke.

Wouldn’t that save you valuable time that you could use elsewhere? You use professionals in other areas of your business. Shouldn’t you be using a professional writer to get your written communications written right?

Note: *Lie (lay, lain & lying) is an intransitive verb and does not take an object. Lay, on the other hand (laid, laid & laying) is a transitive verb and does take an object. Is that any clearer? Those pesky writing rules again!
